Why your build-up dies in the second phase

Everybody can play out of the first line now. Almost nobody has a plan for what happens twenty yards later.

The second phase. The pass into midfield is available; the pass after it is not, and that is the problem.

Key moments

  1. First phase

Two centre-backs and a six. This part is solved almost everywhere.

  2. The turn

The six receives facing his own goal. Everything depends on the next two seconds.

  3. The gap

No third-man option, so the ball goes back and the shape resets.

I have watched a lot of teams beat the first press beautifully and then give the ball away thirty yards further up, and it is almost always the same problem.

The six receives facing the wrong way

Playing into the pivot is not progress on its own. If he has to turn, the opposition midfield has two seconds to arrive, and two seconds is plenty.

The missing third man

The answer is a player who receives on the half-turn beyond the pivot — but he has to be there before the pass is made, which means he is moving during the first phase, not after it.

The session it implies

Nine-v-seven, three zones, one rule: the ball may not go back once it has crossed the middle line. It forces the third man to exist.

The pressing trap that keeps working down the right

Betis v Girona

They invite the pass into the full-back and then take away every option he has. It is not a mistake he is making — it is the trap working.
