The pressing trap that keeps working down the right
They invite the pass into the full-back and then take away every option he has. It is not a mistake he is making — it is the trap working.

Key moments
- 14'
First trigger
The pass to the full-back. Watch the near winger start moving before it arrives.
- 31'
It works
Same trigger, same shape, turnover twelve yards from goal.
- 58'
They adjust
The centre-back steps out to give a third option. It stops working for twenty minutes.
- 74'
And back
Substitution restores the shape, and the trap catches them one more time.
Girona conceded possession in the same twelve square yards four times in this match, and three of them came from an identical sequence.
The trigger is the pass, not the player
It is easy to watch this and conclude the right-back had a poor game. He did not. The press is triggered by the ball travelling to him, and it starts before the ball arrives — which means his options are already gone by the time he can look up.
What is taken away, in order
Forward first: the winger's run cuts the line to the wide midfielder. Then inside: the near central midfielder leaves early. What is left is backwards to a goalkeeper under pressure, or a long ball, and both are outcomes Betis are content with.
Why it stops working at 58'
The centre-back begins stepping past the full-back to offer a third option behind the press. It is the correct answer and it costs them the shape they were pressing with, which is the trade every team makes here.
The session it implies
Eleven-v-eleven on a shortened pitch, one rule: the ball must reach the full-back before the press begins. Coach the moment before the moment.
The ball goes to the centre-back. Nobody presses him — the near winger is already angled to show the pass wide.
The pass to the full-back. Two players leave before it arrives, and the winger cuts the line forward.
Backwards is gone, inside is gone. The ball is lost twelve yards from their own box.
Cumulative xG. The gap opens between 58' and 67' — the twenty minutes the trap was working. 1.68 – 0.88 xG
Eight shots, two goals. Circle area is xG — both goals came from the turnovers, not from open play.
Average positions and pass volume. Almost everything went through the 4 — which is why taking him away worked.
PPDA by fifteen minutes. LOWER IS MORE INTENSE — the press peaked between 60' and 75'.
